Look over the information you can find on your partner's cell phone. Do you see frequent calls to or from an unfamiliar number? Do you see calls identified as someone you know calling much more often than they used to? Cheaters may assign a man's name to his mistress's number to mask her identity or vice versa. Write down any numbers you don't recognize and run them through several search engines to see if it hits upon any useful information. 2. Examine text messages. Frequent texting may also be shown on your cell phone bill. Some companies provide more thorough information than others, and some require you to make a request to see what numbers sent and received text from a phone on your account. Either way, reviewing your cell phone bill periodically will instantly reveal if your partner's been texting dozens of messages a day to another number. Another important piece of information that's easier to see on your cell phone bill than the phone (though it can be there, too) is call duration. Detective My spy camera. So as the school holidays comes to an end in Australia we finish off with yet another release of a children's film. The funny part is that it's a bit like a recipe, as it contains parts of all the other films I've reviewed already these summer holidays! You take the machismo of Playing with Fire, add the silliness of Farmageddon, plus a touch of heart from Frozen 2, not forgetting some funny one-liners from Jumanji, finish it off with some espionage from Spies in Disguise, garnish it with the child-friendly action of Star Wars and you have a perfectly satisfying film called My Spy. Mr. 9 and I ate it up (and reviewed it) last week when we saw it at Palace Nova cinemas!
JJ (Dave Bautista) is an undercover CIA agent who is not exactly inconspicuous. After a weapons deal goes horribly wrong he is assigned to surveillance duty with tech-specialist Bobbi (Kristen Schaal. Their job is to keep an eye on a mother and daughter who may be in danger if a global terrorist finds out where they live. But JJ isn't exactly qualified for surveillance duty and it's not long before he is caught out by clever 9 year old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) the girl he is supposed to be watching. The two work out an arrangement where Sophie won't tell her mum Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) that they are being watched, but only if JJ teaches Sophie how to become a spy. The two don't exactly get along but over time a friendship develops, much to the chagrin of Bobbi who knows that this is a serious breach of the CIA surveillance rules. But, as expected, trouble inevitably finds its way into Sophie and Kate's life and we are left to see whether the spy training that JJ gave this precocious 9 year old will succeed or fail spectacularly.
THE GOOD
For a film like this, with a storyline that has been done to death plenty of times before, I was actually surprised at how much I liked My Spy. But my enjoyment didn't come so much from former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Stuber) but the confidence and acting ability of kid actor Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies. In a lot of these 'kids teaching adults to be kids' films the child usually comes across as bratty and unlikeable but Coleman finds a great balance of clever, likeable and entertaining which Mr. 9 and I really found appealing. Also when you have a great comedy support cast like Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls, Toy Story 4) and Ken Jeong (The Hangover movies) the laughter also lifts a notch too.
Mr.9: I really liked Sophie in this film when she is learning to become a spy. The part where she keeps looking at the explosions behind her was really funny because JJ had to keep turning her head around.
THE BAD
Bautista seems to have found his niche in Hollywood at taking characters who are large, muscle-bound, meat heads with not much going on upstairs. Alongside professional comedians like Schaal and Jeong his comedic acting can sometimes be painful to watch as he tries to compete with them for laughs but comes across more forced than natural.
And for those of you looking for an action film this is not entirely the case with My Spy. Although it is bookended with big, action, set pieces it is more a romantic comedy as much of the film is taken up with telling the story of JJ's budding friendship with Sophie and finding a possible love interest with her mum, Kate.
Mr. 9: It got really boring in the middle because there was no action happening. The bad guy was there at the start and then disappeared until the end of the film. It seemed different from what the trailer showed.
THE UGLY
For those of you who are familiar with Dave Bautista you would know that he is bald up top. Yet for some unknown reason the hair and makeup team decided to either spray paint or put a toupee on top of his head which is jet black and extremely short. It looks so unnatural and left me staring at the top of his head for most of the movie. Somewhat in shock and somewhat in fascination I couldn't stop looking at this unusual follicle choice.
I didn't have high hopes for My Spy after seeing the trailer but walked out pleasantly surprised at how a completely unoriginal film could be so enjoyable. Bautista's charm and Coleman's likeability really carry this film above 'just another comedy. An enjoyable film to finish off the school holidays!
THREE AND A HALF TOUPEES OUT OF FIVE
Mr. 9: All the spy stuff was fun and the movie was also pretty funny although it had a lot of swearing for a 'PG' film. Three and a half out five.

The truth is that most people dont have a clue how powerful modern spy apps are and how available and easy to use they are. If you think someone is spying on your cell phone you need to get familiar with some of the main products available. Heres the problem – when you suspect that you are being monitored, you can become paranoid – its natural I guess – but it can cloud your judgment. Its important to know that some of these signs can be caused by other things. Dont look at one and think – thats it Ive been hacked! Look at them all and rule out other possible causes. Signs to Detect Spy Apps Im going to list a few of the main signs that can help detect spy apps on your phone or device. Use some common sense here and try to think rationally – start with an open mind. You are looking for significant signs at first before digging deeper. Look for Changes in Phone Behavior This is often your first hint that something is wrong. You are looking for sudden changes in your phones behavior. Things like: Battery Drain – is your phone battery running down faster than normal? This used to be a really strong indicator. Spy apps used to really hog the phones battery and cause serious drain but the modern programs have largely addressed this issue. If someone is spying on you with older software, you might notice a sudden deterioration in battery life. Other causes of this can be software apps you have installed yourself or just that your battery is losing its ability to hold a charge due to age. Strange Background Noise – some software programs can listen to and record your calls. This works by adding them as “a conference call” – but this can lead to you being able to hear strange background noise. Of course we have all had this with a bad connection but if it is happening all the time you could have spy software on your phone. Random Start or Shutdown – some spy software apps can cause the phone to light up as if it is in use or even to shut down by itself. Look for this happening on a regular basis not just a one off. Again the good programs will not exhibit this behavior. Receiving Strange SMS Texts – are you regularly getting odd looking text messages, usually with just numbers and symbols? Some programs use sms texts to issue commands to the target cell phone and if they are not configured properly you might see these messages coming through. Higher Data Use – is your data usage suddenly getting high? Spy programs send logs of your phone use to online servers using your own data plan. Older apps used to be really heavy on data transfers but again the best spy software apps have changed how this is handled. The data transfers are now smaller and most people dont have itemized data billing – so its getting harder to spot. If they are uploading large files like videos from your cell phone – data use could still be noticeable. Check the Cell Phone Files If you are a little more advanced it is sometimes possible to find spy software by looking inside the actual files on the phone. If you go to Settings – Applications – Manage Applications or Running Services, you may be able to spot suspicious looking files. Good Spy programs usually disguise the file names so that they dont stand out but sometimes they may contain terms like Spy, Monitor or Stealth etc. Not everyone is comfortable getting inside the phones file system but if you are only looking for any confirmation you wont do any damage to the phone. What can you do when your neighbor is spying on you? Is your neighbor spying on you, watching your every move? Do strangers seem to know details about your life that you havent shared with them? Are you one of them? Its time to take control and fight back. Find out what to do when neighbors overstep their boundaries and get too close for comfort. Signs Your Neighbors Are Spying on You They tell you stuff about yourself they shouldnt know. You find hints that they are listening or watching via some sort of device. Your mail is being interfered with. You see signs that someone has entered your home while you were out. You often "catch" them watching you. They stalk you on social media. They seem to know your schedule. Signs You Could Be Mistaken You have no proof whatsoever that they are spying. Its an unsubstantiated feeling. Other neighbors seem to get along with them well. Youve had similar experiences in other places youve lived. You think the whole street is spying on you. How to Confirm You Are Being Watched You have to establish if your suspicions are true. Theres no point being constantly worried that you are being spied on if it isnt actually happening. Test for eavesdropping. If they are the sort of people who seem to delight in letting you know that they are aware of whats going on in your life, then test them. Have telephone conversations inside your home and car mentioning some untrue event (for example, youve booked a cruise ship vacation, you are thinking of buying a parrot, or you have invited a relative to move in with you; something preposterous. Then, see if your neighbor repeats this information back to you. If it is, then you have proof that they are listening to everything they say. Note: Dont let them know that you are aware of their spying. Also be careful not to say anything that could damage your own reputation if it got spread around. Test for mail tampering. Send yourself some interesting-looking, but bogus mail. Check to see if the envelope has been opened or torn ‘accidentally. Keep the evidence. Use anti-spyware. Use a simple and inexpensive bug-sweeping device to discover any hidden listening devices or cameras on your property or vehicles. Repeat your bug sweep every couple of weeks or so. Keep a log. Keep a log of dates and incidents. This is really important. If you ever have to give evidence against them, the fact you kept a detailed log will go in your favor. Maintain records and collect proof. Take photos of anything suspicious and keep them in cloud storage, such as Google Drive or Drop Box. Dont let the folder where you keep your evidence sync to your computer (in case they have access to it remotely. They will need to find out why your neighbors are showing such a keen interest in you. Refuse to engage with them in any way whatsoever. If you use the "gray rock" method (in which you become as emotionally non-responsive as a rock) they might just lose interest. Tell other neighbors whats happening. You must have irrefutable proof, though. If you spread unfounded rumors, you could find yourself in trouble. Dont interact on social media. Additionally, make sure that they are not friends of friends who can see your posts. This may be the one source of the problem. Never announce where and when you are going out. Never post where you are. Change all your settings to the highest security level. Involve the law. If you have collected proof, then report them to the police and any other local authorities. If they are renters, then make a formal complaint via a lawyer to the rental agency or homeowner. You may also file a restraining order. As a last resort, move. This may seem a drastic measure, but what price won't you pay for peace of mind? How to Deal With Nosy Neighbors Nosy neighbors might not be as dangerous or scary, but they can be a nuisance. Its irritating to have people noticing and commenting on your every move. However, you can reduce the effect they have on you. Put up physical barriers. A decent, solid fence or some judicious conifer plantings will prevent them from seeing into your property. Our windows are right on the street and this film prevents anyone, neighbors or otherwise, from getting a look inside. Avoid them whenever possible. If you are walking down the street and see your nosy neighbor approaching, get out your phone and pretend to be talking to someone. If your neighbor tries to stop you, put your hand over the phone and tell him you are talking to your investment manager. Always be rushing off somewhere so that you look too busy to stop and chat. Try coming to a mutual understanding, if not a friendship. Especially if they are physically limited to their home, their unusual obsession with the neighborhood might be understandable. If nothing else, by establishing a friendly rapport youll at least have someone who can keep an eye on your property and take in packages when you arent home. On rare occasions, there could be some nefarious reason why you are being watched by your neighbor. It might be connected to property: perhaps they feel they have a claim on the house you live in? Could there be a boundary dispute? Are they attempting to get you to move out? Why might that be? Are you a nuisance neighbor yourself? Do you have barking dogs, noisy children, or loud parties? Some rental companies offer reduced rents to people who can drive their house-owning neighbors out of the street, so the company can buy up the house to build up their portfolio. Maybe they arent spying on you at all, but you feel so insecure and lacking in confidence that you think that everyone is watching you. In this case, you must seek professional guidance.
